General Scholarship Information

The Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry for the Florida Conference (BHECM) offers two scholarships to active United Methodist Church members who will be in college or seminary this year:

  • Conference Merit Award
  • McMurray Award.

The annual BHECM Scholarship Offering Day (United Methodist Student Day Sunday) has been overlooked in many churches and our scholarship fund has dwindled drastically. Please promote the offering in your church to ensure that we can help more students. This is usually the last Sunday in November each year.

Please, only one application per church, per year may be submitted. Students who received Florida Conference BHECM scholarships previously are not eligible to apply again.

Other scholarships in addition to those mentioned above are available through the General Board of Higher Education in Nashville, website.  There you will find a wide variety of scholarship offerings

Conference Merit Award

The Conference Merit Award must be given to a Florida United Methodist student who plans to attend or attends a United Methodist-related college, university or seminary.

This scholarship is now awarded and managed by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry.

McMurray Award

The McMurray Award may be given to a Florida United Methodist student who plans to attend or attends any institution of higher education. This scholarship is awarded and managed by the BHECM.

For the McMurray Award, the BHECM scholarship committee will review the applications and base their decision on grade point average, community and church service, career choices, recommendations, student’s comments and financial need. For the past several years, the scholarship committee has awarded four to six scholarships of $500 each. We hope to do that again this year.

The McMurray Award Scholarship is a private scholarship fund that will be given to a college student who is a member of a United Methodist church in the Florida Conference. United Methodist churches are invited to nominate one student (no more) for the McMurray Award Scholarship. The student must meet the criteria given below.

APPLICANTS MUST:

  • Be an active full-time member of a local United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to the date of application.
  • Be nominated by a local church through its pastor or the chairperson of Higher Education & Campus Ministry (or campus ministry liaison).
  • Have at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Incoming freshman must have a grade average of B (3.0) or better at the end of the next to the last semester in high school. Students already attending college must have a grade average of B (3.0) or better for the year preceding the award.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the local church and an interest in serving others in the community.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Be a US citizen.

Those who have already received one of these scholarships may not apply again.

The application, with transcripts and nomination forms must be returned to the Conference office (address above) no later than May 30.
